‘Castleisland Railway History’

Note: This lecture was originally due to take place on the 25th February 2021.

In this webinar Castleisland journalist/photographer John Reidy takes ‘A Look Back the Tracks’ at the history of the Gortatlea to Castleisland Railway.

The line opened in September of 1875 and finally closed in January 1977. In the webinar John will share his personal recollections of the train and the station. Also, John will share an interview with local historian, photographer and photo collector, Timothy Murphy whose family business, T.H. Murphy Hardware Merchants LTD depended on the railway for supplies.

Furthermore, John will reveal an interview with nonagenarian Mrs. Nancy Mahony, who was the gate-keeper at Camp crossing from the early 1960s. Mrs. Mahony admitted to feeling lonesome on closing the gates after the departure of the last train in the winter of 1977. This and much more, will be revealed by John in what promises to be a captivating webinar.
