Issue No. 21 of The Kerry Magazine will be launched on Tuesday December 7th, at 7.00pm, in the Local Studies Department of Kerry Library, Moyderwell, Tralee.
The Magazine will be launched by Mary-Rose Stafford, Head of Department of Hotel, Catering, Tourism and Business Studies, Institute of Technology, Tralee. All members are welcome to attend.
This year's magazine contains 17 articles (including what has become known as "our schools' project") with subject matter ranging from Reminiscence of Molahiffe Fair to The Challenges of Caring for a Historic House. Also included is part two of The Index to the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society Magazine, Issue No. 11 (2000) to Issue No. 20 (2010).
Continuing with our policy of publishing synopses of certain lectures, this issue of the magazine contains an article by Bryan MacMahon entitled Richard Crosbie: Pioneeer of Balloon Flight.
This year The Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society was happy to collaborate with the Institute of Technology, Tralee, in our Outreach Programme. 15 first-year travel and tourism students were set an assignment by Ms. Fiona Tobin (tour-guiding module lecturer) to design and run a half-day tour of Tralee and its environs. For the purpose of the assignment the class was divided into two groups. One of the assignments a Historic Tour of Tralee is published in the magazine.
The Kerry Magazine is published annually in December. Anyone wishing to submit an article for consideration by the editorial committee should do so by the preceding June 30th. We welcome short articles (maximum 2000 words) from both academics and non-academics, on topics related to any aspect of Kerry's rich and diverse cultural heritage. Contributors are also required to submit appropriate illustrations with their articles and a brief autobiographical note for publication in our contributors' list.

The 2010 Nora Ní Shúilleabháin Memorial Lecture entitled "The Fenians were Dreadful Men" will be presented by Pádraig Ó Conchubair, Member, in the National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin on Monday 29th March at 6.30pm.
The lecture deals with the Kerry influences on the founding of the IRB and the efforts made by Fenians to obtain military training in the Papal Brigade. It describes the Cahersiveen Rising, touches on the General Rising on March 5th & 6th 1867 and the Clerkenwell Explosion - the 'last hurrah' of the Fenians.

A new book of interdisciplinary essays on the Iveragh Peninsula has been published
'The Iveragh Peninsula: A Cultural Atlas Of The Ring of Kerry', edited by John Crowley & John Sheehan, was formally launched by John A. Murphy, Emeritus Professor of History, UCC and John O'Donoghue TD, An Ceann Comhairle, at Tech Amergin, Waterville on 17th July.

MAJOR developments including shopping centres and retail parks will not be allowed to be built off the controversial M3 motorway near the Hill of Tara reported the Irish Independent on the 18th of July.
The Tara Skryne Valley, one of the most archaeologically rich areas in the country, will be officially designated as a Landscape Conservation Area, which will ban major developments and ensure the landscape is left intact, Environment Minister John Gormley announced yesterday.
And he said he was fully committed to nominating the Hill of Tara as a UNESCO World Heritage site when Ireland draws up its shortlist of sites at the end of the year.
